A Georgia man uncovered new evidence while magnet fishing that could lead to the conviction of a man accused of killing a couple in 2015. Authorities said that the magnet fisherman recovered a .22-caliber rifle from Horse Creek in McRae-Helena last week. Two days later, he pulled a bag out of the water containing a cell phone, the driver’s licenses, and credit cards of Bud and June Runion.
Bud and June Runion were killed in 2015 after following up on a Craigslist ad for a 1966 Ford Mustang. Their family became concerned when they never showed up to babysit their grandchildren. Four days after they disappeared, their bodies were found shot to death in an SUV submerged in a pond.
Investigators identified Ronnie Jay Towns as the suspect and said he lured them with the fake Craigslist ad. He was indicted by a grand jury for murder and armed robbery, and his trial is expected to begin in August. It is unclear why his trial has been delayed for the last nine years.
