Mayor Turner Wants "Congestion Pricing" On Houston Roads

Hat Tip to Charles Blain at Urban Reform who first reported that Mayor Turner along with Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum pushed for “commuter fee” tax better known as congestion pricing on drivers in the City of Houston.

Last week, city council shot down their proposal.

Blain reports that at last week’s Houston city Council meeting “one council member attempted to tack on an amendment that would have opened the door for a “commuter fee” better known as congestion pricing.

Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum offered the amendment, with the full support of Mayor Sylvester Turner, and it would have created an exploratory committee to research the new fee.”Castex-Tatum said “this is just an opportunity for us to look for another way to source some additional revenue.”The amendment died.

Blain writes “simply put, commuters would pay to drive into the city’s core. The revenue would be used for infrastructure improvements as, according to the council member, commuters aren’t currently paying their fair share.”

What exactly is “congestion pricing”? Reason.com’s Christian Britschgi writes “congestion pricing is a variable toll on drivers that rises or falls based on how many cars are on a stretch of road at a given time. The idea is to harness the power of the price mechanism to ration when and where people drive.”
