Active Shooter Situation at Pearl Harbor Leaves at Least 3 Injured

75th Commemoration Of Attacks On Pearl Harbor Held In Hawaii

Authorities at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard say security forces have responded to reports of an active shooter situation. At least three people have been injured, two gravely, Hawaii News Now reported. The gunman died at the scene after fatally shooting himself. The three victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The base was locked down at around 2:30 p.m. with base personnel urged over the PA system and in text messages to shelter in place. The lockdown of the base was lifted at around 4 p.m. local time.

"Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam security forces have responded to a reported shooting at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. Due to the ongoing security incident, access/gates to JBPHH are closed. We will update when we have further information," a Facebook post from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Facebook page.

Witnesses told the outlet the shooting occurred at Drydock 2.

“I kind of recognize that as gunshots,” the witness said. “I looked out in time to see the shooter ... shoot himself."

Pearl Harbor is the home for the headquarters for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The shipyard is located across the harbor from the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, where the 78th anniversary of the attack by Japan that prompted the U.S. to enter World War II, will be marked on Saturday.
