Man Arrested After Child Thrown From Third Floor Balcony at Mall of America

Police in Bloomington, Minnesota say a 5-year-old suffered 'significant injuries' after a man allegedly threw or pushed the child off the third floor of the Mall of America.

Police say they responded to a call at the mall at around 10:17 a.m. Friday morning after receiving reports about a child falling from the third floor to the first level. Witnesses told police they saw a man push or throw the child off the side.

"The child did suffer significant injuries," Bloomington police Chief Jeff Potts told reporters Friday. "The child has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care."

The man suspected of pushing the child "took off running" immediately after the incident, witnesses say. Police were able to track the 24-year-old man down inside the mall, and took him into custody.

Emergency services performed CPR on the child in the southeast corner of the mall before the victim was taken to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.

The suspect is currently at the Bloomington Police Department. Police say they do not believe there is a threat to the public.

"At this time, we do not believe that there is a relationship between the child or the family of the child," Potts added.

The area where the fall occurred has been closed for now while police conduct their investigation.
